Sunset on Morro Bay

Solar science is my first love. I began learning about space by learning about the Sun. I think it is fitting that I post this beautiful sunset picture I took last week at Morro Bay along the California coast. It was the most gorgeous sunset I have ever seen.

Last week my husband and I meet our son, daughter-in-law, and grandson in San Diego for a visit to the zoo. It was a perfect place to take a very curious three year old. He had a great time. His favorite animals were the elephants and the tigers. My favorites were the polar bears.

As you can see from the picture, my grandson is a cutie pie! This was taken on the second day at Sea World. He was very tired. We found a shady spot to rest while mommy and her friend went on a ride. I was just sitting and cooling off when I heard him. "Sadie." (He calls me Sadie, not grandma.) I looked at him and he said, "Take my picture." He was posing for the picture! What a cool kid he is. It was such a pleasure to go on this trip and share it with my son's family. By the way, he didn't like Shamu drenching him with water!

Saturday is a summer work day for me. I am presenting a Sun workshop at the Space Science Lab at U. C. Berkeley. My writing partner works at the lab. That is my connection to the lab. We have an all day workshop planned for K-12 teachers. We will do a breakout session for the K-4 teachers while one of the astronomers works with the teachers of older students. I am looking forward to this workshop. Teachers always love them because they are free and they recieve so many nice classroom materials. They recieve curriculums, books, posters, and a lot of resources on-line and at the lab. Plus they do a lot of hands-on learning themselves and learn more than they thought possible about the Sun. Everytime we do one of these workshops someone will always say, "I didn't know that. I learned something new today!" It is so meaningful when teachers feel like they are learning something new. And, everytime, I learn a new little nugget of information myself.

I am a second grade teacher who also writes Space Science Curriculum for NASA. I am interested in hearing from other teachers who love Space Science and want to teach more science in their classrooms.
