Getting Ready For School!
I can't believe the summer is already gone. I have spent the past two days unpacking all the boxes I had to pack in June so that summer school could use my room. I spent over twenty hours packing things away. Now, I have already spent ten hours putting it back. Here is a little known fact. I don't get paid a cent for doing it. I think the general public thinks teachers have this wonderful summer off! Not true. The week after school was out, I worked for a week putting together assessments for this year. The following week I went to a required 40 hour workshop to learn how to use my math book. The one I have been using for two years! Believe it or not, I can read. In addition, I presented at seven workshops over the summer. Some had a stipend, some did not.
In addition to the extra work we perform for nothing, I have also spent about $400.00 already just getting ready for this new school year. By the end of the year I will have spent between $1200.00 and $1500.00 on my class. Out of my pocket!
Okay, now that I have complained about teaching, let me tell you a secret. It is the best job in the world. I still love it. I just don't like all the misconceptions that surround the job and the lack of respect from the general public. Teachers earn their salaries and a lot more. And, I am proud of the work I do with my students. The best feeling in the world is to teach a child to read.
