Where did September go?

I just can't believe it is September 30th! When school starts, my time flies out the window.

I always feel so consumed by school. I am now bonded with these 20 kids. I know what they need in the way of teaching and I am getting to know what they need in the way of being little human beings on this planet. We have been in school 23 days and I have already had one little one say to me, "I wish you were my mommy and I could live with you." It is scary to think a child would so readily want me in their life on a permanent basis. One of the reasons that I continue to work in the inner city is to be available to children who need good teaching. I feel I can make a difference in their learning. It is just so hard to deal with all the other needs that I know I can never fill.

We had Back to School Night last week. I had 15 families represented. That was wonderful. I told the parents I felt honored that they trusted me with their children each and everyday. I went over the usual. Standards, expectations, etc. At the end, my parents gave me a standing ovation. What a shock! They told me that they wanted me to be tough and appreciated me for giving them so much more than a 2nd grade education. They love that I do space sciences with the children. Most of the parents told me they had requested me or hoped their child would be in my room. Now I have 10 months to show them their trust was not misplaced. Yikes, the pressure.

I love teaching! It is still the best profession on the planet. Even if teachers are the only people who know that for a fact.

I am a second grade teacher who also writes Space Science Curriculum for NASA. I am interested in hearing from other teachers who love Space Science and want to teach more science in their classrooms.
