What a Day!
I am seeing red! I was teacher in charge for a day. The principal was out for religious reasons and the vp was at a training. If you are a teacher, here is some advice. NEVER, NEVER agree to be teacher in charge. Our principal believes that discipline should be handled on a one on one basis. In other words, there are no set rules with set consequences. What a mistake. Our kids are hungry for someone to tell them what their limits really are and how far they can go before someone stops them. Well, I was the person to stop them. If I didn't care about them I would let them get in as much trouble as they wanted. But, I do care. I want them to be great human beings who can make great choices. Most of the teachers are with me on this one. Only one, who is not credentialed, thinks I am too hard on the kids. Her class is really out there! They never listen to anyone. Including her. Why? Teachers need to set rules and enforce those rules. Otherwise, our classrooms are chaos. Our students are worth so much more. I think about my grandson and the classrooms he will one day attend. I truly hope he will have strict task masters who expect a lot from him and the other students. That is the key to great schools. High expectations and follow through.
This day really brought a lot of emotions forward from me. I feel so helpless sometimes with a principal who just doesn't value our students enough to expect them to behave. Yet, I am even more determined to help my class learn how to achieve greatness. I just hope I never feel like I have to give up.
